Corners (Card Deck Chance/Hearts, Clubs, Aces, Diamonds)

WARM UP

Explain the difference between dependent and independent events.

Draw table on the board (Independent/dependent) and use counters/marbles, coins and dice to model and discuss the many ways outcomes can alter if we change the variables.

Corners (Ace, Spade, Hearts, Clubs)

  • Explain that students have to choose which suit of cards to go to before each card is drawn from the pack and that if they happen to be at that suit when it is drawn they are out of the game.
  • Cross off cards on board and show how this changes odds for each suit to demonstrate how the  change is dependent.
  • In random rounds place the card back in the pack and announce you are doing so and have them call out whether they think it is a dependent or independent round from the one before.
  • As the game progresses and many cards are crossed off, before drawing a new card have a 30 SECOND THINK/JUSTIFY TIME – ask questions of those still in and out on the floor.
  • Continue to ask questions as you play e.g. Can you work out the probability of how many red cards are left after 3 drawn out etc.
  • When all students are left but one, they are the winner of the round. Everyone can come back in and continue to play through the deck or reshuffle and begin again.
