The Great Capacity Race.
The great Capacity Investigation:
(Adapted from the RRRR game – Pass the Water).
Using the basketball court, split students into 4- equal groups. Place a bucket (or two) of water in the centre and have students line up in their 4 groups at even distance from the bucket. In front of each group, have a container with the same capacity (I will try to get four ice-cream containers). The aim is to one-by-one retrieve water from the bucket with a small container (Each team will have a different sized container) and fill their team’s ice-cream container until it’s full.
Have the class predict who will fill up their ice-cream container the quickest and why.
Take note who finishes first and get students to explain why (their team’s container had a larger capacity). You can link to spilt water and that containers might not always be at FULL capacity).
