Warm Up

Play “finish my picture”

Draw a vertical line on the board. On one side draw a picture. ask a student to complete the picture on the other side of the line, making sure it is the same as your picture.

Watch the video. Discuss symmetry with particular focus on lines of symmetry. Have some shapes cut out of paper. Discuss which shapes are symmetrical. Ask different students to fold and cut along the line of symmetry.

Rotation activities x2

1.Butterfly Wings. On a copy of BLM 41, students draw patterns on one side of the wings. They then swap and their partner draws the EXACT same pattern on the other side to make it symmetrical.

2. Mirror shapes. Place a line of masking tape on the floor. Ask one child to make a pattern using pattern blocks on one side of the tape. Place a mirror on the tape and ask students to discuss what they see. Now have them make the mirror image on the other side of the tape.
