Area – My Dream Home

Launch/Hook:

Go to realestae.com.au and look up some houses in Toorak or some other fancy suburb. Hen flick through to their floor plans. Discuss how they have the area of each room recorded and show how the area of the whole house can be recorded by adding. We will be using whole numbers, but they use decimals.

Explore:

Explain to students that today they are going to design a floor plan of their dream house. They must use a ruler and grid paper to design their house. They need to calculate the area of each room and also the area of the entire house. 

It must include:

*at least 2 bedrooms

*1 bathroom

*kitchen

*loungeroom

*dining room

*laundry

Other options:

*extra bedrooms

*extra bathroom

*games room

*indoor gym/pool

Enabling:

Choose the minimum amount of rooms.

Count squares to calculate area.

Make rooms squares and rectangles so it’s easier to calculate.

Extending:

Challenge yourself by choosing many rooms. 

Calculate area by using LxW method.

Use composite shapes for rooms instead of just squares and rectangles.
