The Black Hole
Watch the above video beforehand to explain how to play the Black Hole game. Use the The Black Hole Maths Game.pdf board to play.
Students take it in turns of numbering the circles to 9. There will be one circle remaining which will become the black hole. The numbers surrounding this black hole will automatically be cancelled out. Then players calculate their numbers to find the total. Encourage students to use the counting on strategy. Students can keep a running total to help. Encourage students to count on/back using a number line.
Extension: Start with 50, minus the numbers. Use the counting back strategy for this. They can also start at a higher number and number their circles to create more advanced addition equations.
