Students sort a handful of coins. How have you sorted them? Discuss.

What are the features of the coins?

-size

-colour

-animal

-value, numbers

Using the coins, order these in lines. (This can create a pictograph)

Count how many coins in each line?

Does anyone know the total of each line?

How do we calculate this?

Can we find the number of 10s in each of the coins?

Can we add these together?

Using the handful of coins, sort them into value groups/lines.

Refer to slide 3
