Place Value – Basketball Jerseys
We are learning to order numbers according to their place value.
Discuss our knowledge of place value so far as a class. Brainstorm all the things that come to students’ minds.
Today, we are going to make our own Basketball team.
Students get a sticky note and write their favourite 1, 2 or 3 digit number on it. They then place the sticky note on the front of their top.
Without talking, students then place themselves in order from the lowest to the highest number.
Correct the order of the numbers as a class.
-
Which player has the lowest number?
-
Which player has the highest number?
-
Do any players have the same number?
- How do we know? (Discuss value of the digits).
Now it is your turn.
You are going to design your own Basketball team.
You will need to first choose 5 numbers of players to play on the court at the one time.
You create random numbers to display on the jersey of your players.
Cut out the Basketball jerseys with the numbers you have written on them and place them in order from the smallest to the largest number.
Then, compare the jerseys from your team with a partner’s team of the opposite colour and place the combined players in order from the smallest to the largest numbers.
If time, visit more team’s players to order (with opposite colour).
After, stick in your team’s jerseys in your Maths book in order.
Enabling: Use one or two-digit numbers – use a number line or hundreds chart to assist.
Extending: Use 4+ digit numbers
The total in your team is 13 tens and 6 ones. What could the numbers on your basketball jersey be?
