Five Pattern Blocks (Positional Language)
The teacher models positional language by moving an object around the room in different locations and on different surfaces. Eg. Put the teddy on top of the bookcase, put the teddy between the two chairs.
WE DO: Counter hunt:
Hide different coloured counters in the classroom. Have students search for them, and then describe where the counters were hidden. Make a chart using positional vocabulary. eg. under the table, next to the book case, beside the teacher’s desk.
Five pattern blocks:
Students are to work in pairs sitting back to back. Student 1 makes a design on the floor using 5 pattern blocks(coloured shapes). They will then direct student 2 to make an identical design. Have pairs compare the two designs. Questions: Was the second design exactly the same as the first? Could you have given more exact directions to your partner?
Repeat the activity a number of times.
