Museum Budget (Addition, subtraction, bar models)

Number bars

We are going on an excursion to the Melbourne Museum:

We have a budget of $25 are we able to go?

Budget $25

Entry $6

Bus $15

How can we solve this, are we able to go?

Use the bar model to add the total up and show how you can break numbers down into parts so that it is easier to add together.

We Do: Does this fit the budget? why not? How did you solve this?

We DO

use unifix in different colours like the bar model on the board. Kids do this with you as you do it on the board. Slowly transition and phase out so they are doing it on their own.

  1. us = $14, Entry = $7, Budget = $25

  2. Bus = $8, Entry = $5, Lunch = $6, Budget = $20 (three costs)

  3. Bus = $16, Entry = $12, Budget = $30

One student is the Organiser: reads the costs aloud and gives out play money.

One student is the Treasurer: works out if the money covers it.

They record their working:

  • Addition for total cost.

  • Subtraction to see what’s left (or how much extra is needed)
