We can show numbers in many ways (MAB etc). To understand place value, we need to know the special names for each part of a number, e.g. numeral, digit, column, value.
What is an abacus? How are they ordered? Count using an abacus. Make sure that you push the beads across. Make a few numbers.
You may need to show how to record the number on abacus.
Set up two stations across the room. At each station, children are to:
Station 1: MAB
Create a number by rolling 1 or 2 dice. Make the number, then draw in their book.
Write the number next to it.
Station 2: Abacus
Turn over two cards to create a number. Move the beads on the abacus to make a number. Colour in small abacus and stick in a book. Write the number next to it.
You can choose to do stations or just put materials on tables and ask students to create in two ways.
EXT: Roll a number (2 or 3 digit number)
ENA: Choose a number card (1 digit number) Use the same number for each station. When finished, choose a different number.
