Hoop Activity- Place Value

Place value hoop activity

Have 3 hoops at the front of the room (or make a big circle using wool/string)

Have hundreds, tens, ones on each hoop.

Break students into 2 teams.

(girls vs boys or grade 1s vs grade 2s, house colours  etc.)

Write a 3 digit number on the board so students have to split themselves into the correct hoops to match the number.

Eg. if there were 11 students in 1 team, write the number 245

(2 students would stand in hundreds, 4 in tens, 5 in ones.)

Once they’re all in the correct place value. They say their total number out loud.

Depending on your class, up the difficulty by saying they cannot talk.

Time them to see which team is the quickest.
