Ask 3 students to jump as far as they can from one chalk line. Measure their end point with another piece of chalk. 

How can we measure how far each jump was?

Model measuring each jump using some of the below informal units:

Make sure to show how we don’t leave any gaps.

Discuss which informal measurement is the best choice and why?
