Place value explosion

I can regroup numbers when I have 10 of a unit (for example, 10 ones makes 1 ten, and 10 tens makes 1 hundred).

Each pair starts with:

0 tens rods

0 ones cubes

One student rolls a dice.

  1. If they roll a 4, they:

Collect 4 ones blocks.

  1. They keep rolling and adding ones.

  2. As soon as they reach 10 ones, THEY EXPLODE! They must:

Count them carefully.

Trade all 10 ones for 1 ten rod.

Say:

“10 ones is the same as 1 ten.”

  1. Any extra ones stay.

Example:

They have 8 ones.

Roll a 5.

Now they have 13 ones.

Trade 10 ones for 1 ten.

They are left with 3 ones.

They now have: 1 ten and 3 ones (13).

****Continue until they reach 5 tens (50).

Enabling:

  • Provide a tens frame to place the ones in before trading.

  • Have them count together before exchanging.

Extension:

  • 1. When they get to 50, they need to go back down and take away, trading as they go.

  • 2. Aim for 10 tens (100)
