We will learn how days, weeks, months and years are connected.
*I can name the days and months in order.
*I know the number of days in a week and months in a year.
*I know that there is a different number of days in each month.
I do: Optional – movement break and watch video about months of the year.
Share your birthday month, record it in the correct position in the table. Ask student for their month and record in the table. Ask the following:
*How many months are there in a year? (12)
*What is the first month? (January)
*What is the last month? (December)
Chant the months chorally in order together.
Show the month calendar, ask how many days there are in October (31). Explain that the last number of the month tells you how many days there are in that month.
Show students the yearly calendar. Identify all the months of the year and point out that the number of days in each month is different.
We do:
Reteach the number of days in each month. Show the knuckles/finger method. Record the number of days in the table next to the correct month.
Explain that February usually has 28 days, except for every fourth year when there is an extra day. These special years are called a leap year.
Calendar sorting activity nrich activity.
Do this in mixed ability groups.
Students need to work out the order of the months based on their knowledge of the number of days in each month.
Enabling: Have slide 7 up on the board so that students can refer to the number of days in each month.
These cards follow the same idea but with more support. The months are from a different year to the main task, and are colour coded according to the season. Key dates are marked with pictures to provide some starting points for the children.
Extending: work as a group facilitator.
Or have a group working on:
Give children the cards from these sheets which are the months from a three-year calendar. This time, they have to sort them into the three consecutive years, month by month.
