Introduce an Abacus in the classroom show how to represent numbers in the teens on the abacus

Hook:

Look at the temperatures of Melbourne on the iPhone.

Weather Man

Students pick a day and write their temperature.

With that temperature create a Weather man out of playdough. Stick the amount of sticks into your weather man. Place tens on one side and ones on the other side.

Now try and represent your number on an abacus.

Enabling- Make weather man- Subitise one way, now try and subitise the same number in another way.

Extension-Represent the weather for two days.
