Give students strips with eleven (Labelled 0 – 10) boxes on them.
Students start with a counter on 0. They roll a dice to see if they take a certain amount of steps forward…
If they roll an odd number, they move their counter forward that many spaces. If they get to 10, they start again, and give themselves a point.
If they roll an even number, they must immediately go to whichever side they are closest to. If it is ten, then they get a point and start again. If it is zero, they do not get the point. If they are on 5 when the even number goes up, they round up.
Then discuss how this principle of rounding applies to anything.
Demonstrate on the board rounding in different place value columns.
