Give the kids, randomly, a number written on a Post-It, like 23 or 14 or 27, now get them to make unifix towers that long. Use a wall or straight line – place the towers against the wall or line with the number at the base of the tower – which towers are longer than other ones.
Explore further by breaking the towers into tens and ones.
Can you now locate your number on a number line- Check with 1 meter ruler to see if you are correct.
Enabling- A number under 10.
Extending- A number above 20 or more depending
