Mystery Bag Subitising

Roll a dice. Now make this number on the big floor mat tens frames.

Close your eyes- I will make a number. Open your eyes – what number is on the tens frame (how do you know)?

Mystery Bags – prior to the lesson, put together some paper bags with a collection of mystery objects (e.g. beads, pegs, marbles etc).

Give out a bag to each child and ask them to count the number of objects in their bag.

Now see if you can represent this number on a tens frame. Use the laminated tens frames to use multiple times.

Swap and repeat with another bag.
